club history 2008-2010
24 Dec 2009

2008-09
At the AGM Chairman John Wood in his 18th season at the helm was proud to report on several successes for the club over the previous season. These included the Sunday 2nd XI becoming champions of Division One, The Saturday XI lifting the Horace Franklin Cup, the Sunday 1st XI finishing in their highest ever position in the Premier League which saw them the longest standing present side in the top flight, and the U15s becoming champions of their league. Having not been permitted to be promoted to the Premier League the Sunday 2nd XI had sadly decided to take their players away and enter this division as FC Hunters Leap. John wished them the best and looked forward to meeting them on the field next season.
Treasurer Roger Dawson, in his 42nd season, stated that, having produced one of the best financial seasons’ for some time in 2006-7 (turning around a working deficit of £91.00 on the previous season to one of over £2,000.00 profit) the last season had been one of disappointment with a working loss on the year of over £1,700.00. Income was down by over £2,000.00 while expenditure was up by a similar amount. This in his opinion was not the way the club should be working and next year he was to be more diligent with our expenditures and more effort made in fund-raising.
£4,959.00 had been brought forward from 06-07 and together with income of £15,315.00 there had been a working balance of £20274.00. Unfortunately expenditure had risen to over £17.000 leaving a balance of only £3256.00 and the £1,700 working loss.

Petch. The Club “Buy-a-Brick” would again continue for a 4th season and viewed as a Signing on fee.
A Constitutional change was that any player who has a fine owed would repay it in full with 5 weeks or the club would apply to the LFA for that player to be suspended.
Prior to closing the Chairman felt members should be advised of the amount the Burger Lady had donated to the Club following the Fun Day. In discussion it had been agreed she would give 20% of her profit to the club. On the day she was extremely busy throughout, going to the Co-op on 3 occasions to get further supplies. The general view was that she possibly cleared £1,500 minimum. Her donation to us was £40!! It was agreed that she be replaced by someone else.
It was agreed that the club would run 13 sides with last seasons’ Sun “A” side becoming the Sun 2nd XI on the departure of last seasons’ championship winning side (now FC Hunters Leap).
Sat XI - manager Stuart Robinson (3rd season) assisted by Brian Blackband. – team playing in Lincoln Saturday League (only one league) - players lost from last season were Steve Brumpton, Andy McDowall (inj.) Matt Abbott, Matt Purbrick. Also lost during season through injury was Matt Hardy while Guy Goodwin and Joe Smith both briefly left to play for Lincoln united Reserves before returning to the fold. New to the team were Ben Deakin, Mark Jordan, Chris Appleyard, Matt Blackband and Shane Allam. The side was the club’s busiest team playing 33 games. League P26 W6 D3 L15 F58 A70 Pts 24 – Final position 10th / 14 – Champions Heckington Utd 73 pts and Plough Skellingthorpe 67 pts. (both would leave to join the Lincs League in 09-10). The teams average age was still impressive – being only 21.00 - top scorer was Ashley Woodhall with 14 goals followed by Jon Miller (11). 71 goals were scored during the season at an average of 2.15 per game while 2.9 were conceded. Four clean sheets were kept and the side failed to score on five occasions. The side’s best wins were 6-0 victories over Horncastle Town (H) (opening game) and Harby (H). The worst defeat was 7-0 defeat at home to Plough Skellingthorpe and an 8-1 defeat at Ivy Tavern in the Amateur Cup. In e away league game with the Ivy keeper Jon Wright scored one of the goals from his own box in a 6-3 reverse. During the season 43 players were used (compared to 38 the previous season). Of these only 7 played in 20 or more games while 15 played in 3 or less. No player was ever present with Ashley Woodhall making the most appearances (28 from 33). The sides best run was to win three games in a row from 29/11 to 2012/08 while the worst run was one of 4 defeats from 31/1 – 28/2/09. Just two doubles were completed over Harby and Fulbeck with four conceded against Cherry Knights, FC Rustons Utd, Plough Skellingthorpe and AFC Victory. The team saw an increase of one in cautions to 19 and a reduction of one dismissal to one. The player sent off was keeper Matt Wilds in his debut a home to AFC Victory in a 5-3 defeat. In cup competitions the team saw early exit from the Lincs Junior Cup and Village Trophy going out at the first hurdle to Plough Skellingthorpe both occasions 5-1 and 5-2 (away from home). There was also a quick exit from the David Cooper Cup at Cherry Knights 2-1. In the amateur Cup the side beat Harby 3-2 in round one but then went out to Ivy Tavern 8-1. Having held a mid table position in the league for much of the season a bad run in the new year saw the side slip into the bottom four which saw them entered into the Horace Franklin Cup (which the side had won the previous season). In the semi final they hosted BBH and defeat was looking on the cards being 2-1 down with minutes to go when Matt Robinson headed an equaliser and Billy Fox a long range volley for the winning in the final minutes in semi darkness. This secured a second appearance in the final in two years with the final being played at Moorlands against Horncastle Town. The two sides went to extra time with the scores tied on 1-1 with Ash Woodhall scoring for Meg and Will Carter for Horncastle. Then in the dying minutes of extra time skipper Guy Goodwin, having gone up front, netted a dramatic winner, to retain the Trophy. A first for the club at senior level was the official being a woman as Elinor Blanchard officiated in the 1-1 draw with Heckington. In reality the experience of Heckington saw her conned as four Metheringham players finish in her note book. The season closed with victory over Fulbeck at home but it will be remembered by 16 year old Elliott Ward who scored his first senior goal as he netted with a peach of a shot from wide on the wing, having seen keeper Tim Crosby stranded. During a busy season several players reached milestones with Matt Robinson passing 150 club games, Steve Brumpton and Ash Woodhall 100 club games, Jon Miller 50 club goals and Matt Hardy, Steve Brumpton, Joe Smith, Ash Woodhall and Guy Goodwin 50 Sat XI games.

Sun 1st - management team of Alan Brown / Steve Asher / John Wood – playing in Sunday Premier League (9th season) – the longest standing side in the top flight at present time following relegation of Waddington Utd. A difficult season after having finished fifth the previous season. Players lost from last season squad were Adam Weston while fellow striker Ben Garrick played just 9 games due to work and injury. Also lost were Simon Sewell, Tony Sewell and Matt Robinson due to management issues with the latter two joining the 2nd XI. Only three clean sheets were kept while the side failed to score on 7 occasions. The worst run was one of a failure to win in the last eight games, including losing the last four. In the next game another Grimsby League side Louth Utd won 4-3. The team passed through the 1st round of the Kelly Read cup on penalties 5-4 against lower league side Royal Oak after 3-3 draw. Bardney were beaten 3-1 (H) on an icy pitch in the next round before going out at 2-1 at Nettleham, once again. The Ron Eaglen was even more dramatic as Div 4 side MRWMC were beaten 2-0 with both goals scored by “ineligible players” Matt Wood and Tom Garrick. Monks Road appealed but in a counter claim they had also played an ineligible player and both clubs were thrown out. When will we learn!!

2009-2010
At the AGM John Wood in his 20th season as Chairman made the following statement - The season cannot be described as a total success on the playing front, At Senior and Intermediate level it has, in reality, been a difficult season. The Saturday XI continued its youth policy with the average age of the team just 21. Having held a mid table position for most of the season they slipped into the bottom four as April approached and this qualified them for entry into the Horace Franklin Cup which they had won the previous season. Again they reached the final where they beat Horncastle Town, with Centre Half and Captain Guy Goodwin scoring the winning goal during the last few minutes of extra time to become the only Club side to get anywhere near lifting a trophy this year.
The Sunday First Team started the season as the current longest reigning side in the Sunday Premier League (nine seasons). Unfortunately, this didn’t help them perform and after a season of under achievement (especially in front of goal) they finished in 8th position. Hopefully this lack of goals can be put right next season to make them more competitive. A similar improvement is also required in the Cup competitions, which were very disappointing. Near the end of the season Alan Brown decided that he didn’t want to continue in a managerial role and departed. We wish him well in whatever role he finds for himself in the future.
The Sunday 2nd XI, in Division Four, had a little more successful season with their young team and finished 6th managing to beat the league champions, but in turn lost to the worst team, ‘it’s a funny old game’! It also appears from the makeup of the Sunday League for next season, that they got themselves promoted, which is in itself is an indication of success, however it does mean that they will only now qualify for one cup competition.
The Under 18s, made up mostly of the previous seasons Under 16’s did not have the best of seasons finishing last but one in their League, next season will see them a year older and with the addition of the best of this year’s crop of Under 16s should be more competitive, providing that the senior sides don’t poach all of the better players that is.
After the previous season’s two Junior championships and a Runners-up spot, a look at the league tables doesn’t appear so good this time. However, the Under 16s, Under 14s and Under 13s were all in contention going into the last few weeks of the season, sadly none of them could maintain the momentum and all just failed to win the prize. The Under 12s had a season to forget, whereas the Under 11s, Under 10s (1st year in the “A” League) and Under 9’s all had their moments. The Under 8s had their usual learning year as did the newly formed Under 7’s, and as the object of the exercise at the younger ages is to introduce all players (and their parents) to football and despite what we see on television, to engendered respect for Referees, the opposition and especially their team mates they have had a great time. Well done to everyone involved with all of the Teams.
This AGM will see major changes to our Club management structure. President Cyril Ford has decided that it is about time he had a rest and is stepping down, although I hope that I’m right to assume that he will still be helping Brian with the task of presenting our pitches and surrounds in the condition that we have all been lucky enough and proud enough to witness. Thank you Cyril for all you have done and continue to do for the Football Club and of course that goes for Brian as well.
Cyril’s retirement allows us to invite vice President, Roger Dawson to be our new President. Roger as well as being our VP has been Treasurer for 42 years. He has done an excellent job in difficult circumstances including the demise of the Bingo sessions this year. Now Roger has decided to stand down as Treasurer and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him on behalf of the Club for all of his hard and extremely dedicated work over those many years.
Vice Chairman Derek Sampson will be moved up to be Vice-President and ‘mine host’ (Butch) Graham Bromfield will become vice-chairman. Secretary Pete Ford has agreed to take on the extra responsibilities of Club Treasurer in the short term, giving him the opportunity of putting into practice the skills he has learned as Finance Officer to the Parish Council.
I am very lucky to preside over a very enthusiastic and dedicated Committee. Unlike the majority of Clubs we meet weekly throughout the season to ensure that we run our affairs efficiently and effectively. By doing so, we can continue to provide football for as many people as possible, be it playing, officiating or just watching. Further proof that we do things in the correct manner, we continue to fulfil the requirements of being a “FA Charter Status Club”. This includes having all of our managers CRB checked and continuing to encourage our managers to study for and achieve coaching badges.
The costs of running a club of our size are extremely high. It is always difficult to generate cash so we are always very grateful for all of the help we receive from our fundraisers and sponsors without whose help we could not survive. None more so then Butch and Maggie (and Staff) at the Star and Garter and we thank them for their continuing support.
Roger Dawson in his Final Statement as Club Treasurer made the following comments, “my 42nd and final Treasurer’s Report I am pleased to report a working profit on the year of £649.78. This is encouraging after a working loss of over £1,700 last season. Income was down by approximately £1,300.00 but more encouraging expenditure was down by over £3,600 which proved that we were able to curb our expenditure, for which, as Treasurer, I am most grateful.
For the final time, with a tinge of sadness, I would thank my fellow officers, team managers, committee members for all their assistance. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Club Treasurer but times have moved on and I feel it is time to have a well earned rest. I wish the club all the best in the coming season and in the future.
The Club brought forward £3,256.00 and together with income of £14,050.00 had a working balance of £17,306.00 – Expenditure was (approx) £13,400.00 leaving balance of £3,906.00 to carry forward – A working profit on the season of £650.00 after a previous loss of £1,700.00.

CONSTITUTION CHANGES
Proposed (J.W..) Seconded ( P.F.)
laundry / travel / training money
7.1.a. Laundry will only be paid to teams whose playing kit goes to a central location to be
laundered.
7.1.b. The payment of travel expenses has not been used as it was intended (towards parents etc., who take their cars on lengthy trips) and will therefore be withdrawn totally.
7.1.c. In the light of the two previous proposals and also the fact some teams collect training money and others fail to do so it is proposed that (in principle), training money collected by each manager will be retained by that respective teams towards their needs during the season.
THIS WAS ACCEPTED UNANIMOUSLY

7.2. End of Season Trophies
Proposed JW – seconded PF
Each season (no later than March) the committee will agree on the amount each team is allowed from club funds towards trophies. This is obviously dependant on the Club’s financial position at the time. The present club policy is that the club pays towards 5 trophies per team. Any additional expense will be covered by respective teams.
THIS WAS ACCEPTED UNANIMOUSLY
