1946-47

Meg FC 1946-47

In the first Village Trophy after the war Metheringham reached yet another final, their tenth, but once again they were to lose (this time for a fifth occasion), going down 2-1 a.e.t. to Navenby at Sincil Bank. Leading up to the final they had a bye in rd 1, then won 4-2 at Digby in rd 2 and beat Saxilby 4-3 in rd 3. In the semi final they met neighbours Martin, who were making their first of four appearances in a semi final, and beat them 2-1.
1947-48

This season saw Metheringham make an early exit from the Village Trophy going out in Rd 1 at Bracebridge Heath 3-2.
There was some compensation as they lifted the David Cooper Cup, beating Navenby 2-1 at Sincil Bank.
During the season Metheringham’s 18 year old starlet Don Dykes signed for Lincoln City - champions of Div 3 (N) – he was also offered terms by Division Two side Leicester City.
1948-49
This season saw a record 29 villages enter the Village Trophy with Metheringham only getting as far as Rd 3 before losing at home to Heighington 1-0. In the earlier rounds they won 4-2 at Welton then 2-1 at Tan Vats in round 2. Heighington would go on to lose in the semi final to eventual winners Bardney.
Despite going out of the Village Trophy the club completed a cup double lifting both the Amateur Cup and David Cooper Cup.
Wragby were beaten 2-1 at Sincil Bank in David Cooper Cup win Don Dykes scoring after 8 minutes and Donaghue Chapman getting the second on 37 minutes.
In the Amateur Cup they beat Old Lincolnians 3-1 at Sincil Bank – this time Donaghue Chapman netted two with the third coming from Bill Hicks
It was a reasonably successful season as they finished Lincoln League Division Two runners-up behind Bassingham. Their playing record saw them lose only one game all season (P14 W9 D4 L1 F42 A12 Pts 22) – Bassingham was P14 W10 D3 L1 pts 23. Had Metheringham not suffered their first defeat in their last game at Wragby (2-1) they would have won the league.

1949-50

Cup competitions came thick and fast in this season as they lifted the David Cooper Cup for a second successive season, beating local rivals British Crop Driers 2-1.
In the Village Trophy 27 teams entered with Reepham beaten (away) 5-1 in round 1. In round two the game against Heighington was abandoned after 25 minutes because of failing light. They won the replay to then meet and beat Saxilby 5-2 in rd 3. This set up an eighteenth semi final appearance against the previous seasons losing finalists Skellingthorpe. The first game saw a 3-3 draw at Metheringham with Skellingthorpe winning the replay 1-0. Skellingthorpe went on to lift the trophy for the first and only occasion when they avenged their previous season’s 1-0 defeat against Bardney by beating them by a record score of 8-2.
As mentioned the fixtures piled up due to cup ties and having played 14 cup ties they should have played 34 league games but were unable to fulfil 7 league games and closed with a league playing record of P27 W19 D4 L4 F96 A36 Pts 42 – still they finished fifth, behind Wragby, Harby, Skellingthorpe and Nettleham. Champions’ Wragby record was P34 W23 D5 L7 F99 A60 Pts 49 just 7 points clear of Metheringham!!

1950-51
The 1950-51 saw the all time record entry in the Village Trophy with 31 villages entering (this record still stands and one has to believe it will never be beaten). Bardney, who had become the team of the moment, reached their fourth final in a row (equalling a record achieved by Billinghay between 1933-1937). For a second season Bardney would be losing finalists as Metheringham lifted the Trophy at Sincil Bank in front of a crowd of 2,772 (receipts of £105.6s.9d). To get to the final Metheringham beat Bassingham 4-0 (rd 1), Coleby 8-2 (rd 2), Martin (H) rd 3 before beating Hykeham (a) 1-0 in semi final.
Metheringham completed another cup double, lifting the Amateur Cup by beating ????? 4-2

1951-52

This season saw Metheringham retain the Village Trophy for the first occasion (and their seventh in total) as they beat Branston 3-0 in front of 1,667 at Sincil Bank. Metheringham’s goals came from Ray Parker Donaghue Chapman and teenager, Ted Oliver. Sides beaten en route to the final were Ashby de la Launde at home 5-1 in rd 1, Navenby away 3-2 in rd 2, Wragby 3-1 (rd 3) and the Skellingthorpe 2-0 at home in the semi final.
1952-53
Metheringham reached a third successive final this season and were obvious favourites to become the first side to lift the Trophy for a third time in a row but it proved not to be as underdogs Bishop Norton (appearing in their first final) beat them 2-1. The final was not played at Sincil Bank for the first time in 21 seasons being played at Welton or Heighington (to be confirmed). To get to their thirteenth final Metheringham register a 10-1 win at Eagle in rd 1, a 6-1 win at home to Digby in rd 2, followed by a 1-0 win over Nettleham in rd 3 and then a 2-0 win at Branston in the semi final. Branston put a protest into the Competition, stating Donaghue Chapman was not eligible but this was over-ruled.

1953-54
The run of final appearances ended this season with the club going out in rd 3, losing 3-0 at home to Welbourn. In the earlier round Caythorpe were beaten 9-2 at home in rd 1 and Wellingore (H) 13-2 Rd 2.

1954-55
Metheringham only reached the second round of the Village Trophy this season going out at eventual finalists Branston 1-0 in rd 2, Leadenham had been beaten 11-1 at home in the first round. With the final still not being played at Sincil Bank, Metheringham hosted the final with Navenby meeting Branston at beating them 4-3 after extra time.

In this season the Metheringham Reserves side were Blankney Hunt Cup runners-up

1955-56
1956 saw Metheringham reach their fourteenth final but suffer their heaviest defeat in the finals, going down 5-1 to Aubourn (who won the trophy for the first time in their first appearance in the final). To date the venue of the final is not known. To get to the final Nettleham were beaten 7-0 at home in rd 1, Bardney 5-2 (a) rd 2, Skellingthorpe (a) 5-4 rd 3 and then Caythorpe 2-1 at home in the semi final

1956-57
1957 saw progress to only Rd 2 of the Village Trophy as the club lost 2-1 at home to Aubourn. Aubourn would go on to lift the trophy for a second season in a row, beating Skellingthorpe 4-2. In the first round Metheringham beat Caythorpe 4-2 (a)
1957-58
Metheringham picked up the Ruskington Cup, defeating RAF Digby 1-0 with a goal from teenager star Keith Moody.

This season saw the club make an early exit from the Village Trophy with Martin knocking them out in Rd 1 at home 2-1.
1958-59
A fifteenth Village Trophy final appearance saw Metheringham suffer their eighth defeat in this showpiece competition for village teams. It also gave them a hat-trick of defeats in this cup as they were to lose to Saxilby 2-1 a.e.t. The finals was played at Wellingore for a second season. In the early round they won 4-0 at Welbourn in rd 2, then in Rd 3 they beat Navenby (a) 8-1 before overcoming (holders) Billinghay at home in the semi final 1-0.
1959-60
Saxilby were to end Metheringham’s progress in the 59-60 Village Trophy as they went on to lift the cup in back to back seasons. Having had a bye in rd 1 Eagle were beaten 9-2 (a) before Saxilby saw them off 3-0 (a) in Rd 3.

1960-61
The eventual winners would also see the end of the clubs progress in the 60-61 season in the Village Trophy. Again the club had a bye in rd 1 before winning 4-2 at home to Langworth. Then Billinghay thrashed Metheringham at home 6-1 in rd 3.

1961-62
This season saw the club appear in their twenty fourth semi final of the Village Trophy and the third occasion against Skellingthorpe. Skellingthorpe had the upper hand for a second occasion, winning 4-2 at Metheringham. Norman Saywell then refereed the final on the Co-op Sports ground with Saxilby beating them 3-1. In the previous round Metheringham won at home to Navenby 2-1 and 3-0 at Collingham.

1962-63
Collingham got their revenge in the Village Trophy the next season beating Metheringham 3-2 in rd 2 after Metheringham had won 10-3 at Wellingore in rd 1. Collingham went on to lift the Trophy for the first time in their history as they beat Saxilby 3-2 who were featuring in their fourth final in five season. Sincil Bank hosted the final for the first occasion in eleven season with 1,649 spectators turning up. D.H. Hudson was the referee.

1963-64

The club reached their sixteenth Village Trophy final this season and were winners against Hykeham (then classed as a “village”) The score was 2-1 with 1,393 people turning up at Sincil Bank for the match. E.W. Clarke was the match official. To get to the final Metheringham won 7-1 at Ingham in rd 1. 3-1 at home to Navenby (rd 2) 5-3 (H) Heighington and then 4-0 at the home of the previous season’s losing finalists, Saxilby.

1964-65
The 1964-65 season saw an executive committee of Fred Amies (president), Cecil Bell (chairman), Secretary/Treasurer Eric Johnson (Paid £14 honorarium) / Roger Dawson and Cyril Ford joined committee in this year. Other committee members included Alan Duxbury, Percy Bell, Sid Keyworth Ted Doughty, George Gray, Maurice Atkin, Bas Hawbrook (1st XI Capt), Frank Bee (2nd XI Capt). Committee select teams.
Club ran two teams – Sat 1st XI (Lincoln Div 1) (management Alan Duxbury / Cyril Ford)
Sat 2nd XI (Blankney Hunt League – Frank Bee injured in early January when Eric Mickleburgh took over). (manager George Gray).

Pete Ford had joined Club from Blankney Estate (club debut v Scopwick (H) 5/9/65 won 5-1 – scored 2) (1st XI debut v Skellingthorpe (a) 3/10/65) and Don Ridley from Navenby. Barry Redshaw also joined Club. In December Ridley requested transfer as did Maurice Moulds. In Village Trophy Rd 1 won 12-1 at home to Eagle; Rd 2 won at Billinghay; Rd 3 won 5-1 at Heighington; semi final won 6-0 at home to Harby.
AC - beat West End 2-0 but lost 1-0 at Navenby in rd 2 – Navenby went on to win AC – beating Leys Utd 6-0 in final.
LJC beat Navenby 2-1 (rd1) / Cranwell RAF 2-0 (H) rd 2 (P. Ford played in goal in absence of J. Topham injured). BMAR Grantham 1-0 (a) rd3 , Spilsby Town 4-2 in ¼ final but lost 2-0 at Grimsby Park Utd in ½ final. – Market Rasen won in final 5-4.
1st XI lost 2-0 in final of Village Trophy to Navenby (at Sincil Bank) (2nd April 1964) (attendance 1,428)(Referee – Norman Saywell).
2nd XI lost in final of Blankney Hunt Challenge Cup against South Kyme 2-1 (Fri 30 April 1964) – early round beat Blankney 3-1 and 7-3 in two league tie and North Kyme 2-1 in ½ final
2nd XI lost in final of Hotchkin Cup against Ruskington 0-5 (Sat 1st May 1964) – in early round beat Bardney 4-0, Chapel Hill 5-1 after 1-1, Mareham 3-0 (1/4 final) Martin 2-1 in ½ final)
In Ruskington Cup lost in ¼ final to Martin 6-1 and in Blankney Hunt Medals beat Dorrington 1-0 before Martin again won in ½ final 1-0.

Executive positions as above with following changes – Secretary Bas Hawbrook (£14 honorarium) / Treasurer Len Smith. New Committee member: Les Hicks, Eric Mickleburgh (Frank Bee stood down). Additionally a Fund-raising Committee was formed with E. Johnson Secretary (honorarium of £14) and following members: Ted Doughty, John Amies, Eric Mickleburgh, Pete Chaloner, Pete Ford, Barry Johnson, Brian Atkin, Ray Parker, Ted Oliver, Pete Butters. This committee had no dealings with team selection.
1st XI and 2nd XI management as previous season. (Brian Creasey became 1st XI capt / Bas Hawbrook v-capt) (2nd XI captain, Len Smith / v-capt, John Amies).

28/9/65 – R. Gale from Travelling Showman sought permission to park on part of Star and Garter – gave donation of £7.10s.0d – same meeting it was agreed that we join Sunday League (B. Hawbrook capt). Alan Duxbury and Cyril Ford managers.
Derek Kettleborough who had decided to stop playing Saturday football and become 1st XI linesman, joined committee.
Sunday XI’s first game in League a Senior Cup tie at North Scarle on 10th October 1965 (game drawn 4-4) (lost replay 1-0).

February 1966 League reps attended meeting to discuss Club’s proposed FA Hearing. Agreed to drop idea. F.A. caused Club to post notices as to their future conduct.
April 1966 Treasurer Len Smith emigrated to Canada – Pete Dawson took over as Treasurer until end of season.
23/4/66 Groundsman L. Hicks reported that player Ralph Currie had entered ground before half time and only paid 6d – agreed Club write to him re the 3d he owed!
Reserves lost 4-3 in ¼ of RC to Ancaster 4-3 but beat Martin Dales 4-2 in Challenge Cup ½ final.

E Harrison (Scunthorpe). Unique occasion in history of tournament that two Lincoln League sides had met in final. Skellingthorpe won with injury time goal.

Club to put in application to take over fixtures of Sunday Premier side which had withdrawn from league.
It was felt the Star and Garter pitch would not be fit for immediate use and the “new” pitch on the “playing field” used. Club to liaise with Council re goalposts.
Mid August this pitch was still not ready. Committee / PC and Under 15’s (Pete Andrews team) were to meet and discuss issues on this.

7 Oct Sun XI beat Woodhall (Div 4) in RE Cup (a) 2-1
13/10/73 Dean Crombie made debut for 2nd XI against Welton in Village Trophy (lost 1-0) and for 1st XI at Louth Utd in Challenge Cup replay the following week (lost 2-0 after 1-1 draw at home). Dean went on to play for Lincoln City, Grimsby Town and Bolton Wanderers.

August 1974 - letter from North Kesteven DC re erecting of fencing between field and OAP bungalows.
16th September 1974 Dr Wright (Council Chairman) and the Clerk (Mrs McAleely) attended meeting. The problem discussed was the purchase of the S&G field by the Council and what effect it would have on the FC. Dr Wright expressed to members the plans of the Council for the future and no hardship would come to the Club . Members pledged their support to the Councils plans. During the meeting it was suggested that one of our members join the JMC (Sec B. Hawbrook elected).
30/9/74 – letter read out from Brewery re the proposed purchase of S&G by Council.

Lincoln League given use of Star for Amateur Cup Final (£10)
BHCC requested use of Star but felt charge of £10 excessive – Club reconsidered and decided £7.50 - BHCC still felt excessive and that club had no right to charge them. Club decided to ask for donation of £2 for use its equipment plus any donation they wished – they sent £5 !
T. Maplethorpe felt new marker was needed – Club to ask if it could purchase one of the schools – Mr Hyde school head not at liberty to sell equipment but club could use it when required.

EMEB had quoted £125 for cabling to provide training lights in field. Out of clubs reach. Messrs T. Maplethorpe, M. Ford and E. Greenwood to investigate other possibilities. Initially suggested running cable from our “old” dressing rooms (old garage in Star yard) – not feasible. Then proposed liaising with C. Harris re installing meter in his property. He had agreed in principle. E. Greenwood to carry out work.
Concern again expressed re balls going into bungalow gardens. Letter to occupants re our concern.
Mid Aug 76 – T. Walker resigned as 2nd XI manager – T. Loney took position.
School groundsman – P. Garrick approached re possibility of marking out Star field. Fee of 60p agreed.
Fred Coatsworth joined Club.
M. Ford offered to purchase new set of shirts for Club with them re-imbursing him later.
S. Kettleborough asked for increase in laundry charge (increased from £1.50 to £2).
Early Sept. Training discussed and with only eight present it was questioned whether Club should go ahead with Floodlights.
