Sunday 2nd XI
It was decision day for the Sun 2nd XI this season with manager Dave Atkin having stood down and assistant, John Sewell and ten players, who had been club players last season, leaving to be a part of the ‘new’ AFC Red Lion or the original Red Lion, Dunston side. The decision was further compounded as to whether the club should continue with the Under 18s or bring all these players through to be the nucleus of the 2nd XI. In the end last seasons’ Under 18s managers of Alan Ward and Ant Jones took the plunge to bring their team into senior football which in reality saw the average age of the side just 19.1. The team was again in Division Three, having finished an excellent 3rd last season. The only players of any age left in the side were Ben (Slasher) Gash and Gaz Ullyatt but Ben found the age difference of the rest of the team, too much for him and he left after one game to return to his old side Red Lion FC. This left Gaz Ullyatt at 25 the oldest player and he captained the side. Unfortunately after only a short time work commitments saw Alan Ward unable to be totally committed to the running of the side, leaving Ant Jones on his own. Before the end of the year the younger player were becoming disillusioned with the rigors of life in a physical league and it proved more and more difficult for Ant Jones to raise a side each week. Then by February, after failing to fulfil two successive games, the writing was on the wall, when only 11 players (out of over 50 registered players) were available to turn out against Newton, even though the 1st XI were without a game. Sadly, after 19 seasons, having been formed in 1992/3 to bring the then U16s into senior football, the club was withdrawn from the league with just six games left to play.
Sept.
The season ironically started off with a home game against AFC Red Lion and with a battling performance the sides shared a 1-1 draw. Jamie Kutzner, on his debut, but in his only game scored the goal but the indiscipline in the side proved evident from the outset with bookings for both James McKay and Andy Miles. The first away game took the side to Welton SSC Res who would be promotion contenders after having been promoted from Division Four as champions. It ended in a 6-0 defeat, the heaviest away defeat of the season. Jack Sherratt, on debut, became the third player to pick up a booking. The next home game brought another promoted side in Plough Sturton and the side again failed to find the net, losing 3-0. Discipline went out the window with four more players in the book, including George Garrick who incurred the referee’s wrath only minutes after making his debut as a substitute. Also in the book were Ben Garrick, Jake Thorpe and Tim Robinson. The month closed with a third successive defeat and another where the side failed to find the net as a trip to Lincoln Imp ended 3-0. The side was averaging two bookings a match as, Matt Robinson (guesting) for a bare eleven, became the eighth player to be booking in the opening four games. League position – 10/11
Oct.
October opened with a trip to FVA Jerusalem Res and the team scored for the first time in over 300 minutes of football but still suffered a fourth defeat in a row, losing 3-1. Andy Miles netted the goal but also bagged his second yellow card. It was back to firing blanks in the following game as the side suffered their worst home defeat of the campaign, going down 7-0 to Ruston SSC. For the first time in five games the players got through ninety minutes without picking up a booking. The month ended with one of the closest games as ‘champions elect’ Victory Athletic won 3-2. Ben Deakin available due to the 1st XI be in-active netted both goals. League position 11/11
Nov / Dec.
A forced winter break came into play due to frozen and snow covered pitches for 8 weeks.
Jan
2011 opened with a return encounter against Plough Sturton and the team again found the net twice but suffered seventh straight defeat, going down 3-2 for a first league double. Rikki Smith and Adam Swales both scored their first goals for the team. Again enhanced by 1st XI players the side won their one and only game when hosting FVA Jerusalem Res. Ben Deakin bagged another two goals along with one from Mark Jordan. After having not had a caution in three games Tim Robinson picked up the sides tenth caution in nine games. The following game saw cup action as Div 4 side Heighington were visitors in the Fred Quibell Cup. Again the team found the net more than once but were knocked out 3-2 with Jake Thorpe and Elliott Ward getting the goals; for Ward it was on debut. Matt Blackband in goal made his 50th senior appearance. The third home game in a row saw Welton SSC Res become the second side to complete a league double. Winning 3-0 saw the team fail to score for a fifth occasion. The final game of January saw the side hit the most goals in any game playing but they still lost, going down 7-3 to Ruston SSC to suffer a third league double. Jake Thorpe netted his second goal of the season with the others coming from Tim Robinson and Jack Sherratt, their first goals for the side. League position 11/11
Feb
The first two games of February should have seen the visit of Ruston Eagles and a return encounter with leaders Victory Athletic but manager Ant Jones was unable to get enough players and had to forfeit the points thus giving Victory their league double. The next game saw fellow strugglers Newton Utd as visitors and again due to the 1st XI being inactive several players came in to ensure the match was played. Sadly despite leading, the side went on to lose 5-2 with Ben Deakin and Dan Atkin getting the goals. Keiron Adams saw the eleventh caution to be collected in just 13 games. To add insult to injury the club was fined for playing both Mark Jordan and Liam Hargrave who had both played 10 games for the 1st XI. This proved to be the final game as five 1st XI players had been used and there was no way a side could be raised for the next or following games. This left six matches unplayed as the club sort permission to withdraw the team from the league despite trying to find someone to see the side through to the end.
The side played 13 games, collecting one win and one draw. No away points were secured and only sixteen goals were scored at an average of 1.23 per game. In contrast 49 were conceded (3.47 per game). 37 players were used with 16 making their debuts. Only 9 played in 7 or more games while 18 played in 3 or less. One player, Matt Blackband was ever present. Ben Deakin was the top scorer with 5 goals in 8 games played. 11 cautions were picked up.
As stated the side had been formed in 1992 and had seen much success, rising from Division Eight to the Premier in those nineteen years. The first title was to win Division 8 in 1993/4. Then Division 6 champions – 1994/5, Division 5 runners-up – 1996/97, Division Two runners-up 2007/08, Division 1 Runners Up - 2006/07 and then Division 1 Champions 2007/08 before the side left to become FC Hunters Leap and the Sun ‘A’ side took over as Sun 2nd XI.
Since the sides demise Dave Inman (presently with North Scarle but recently moved into the village) has come forward to offer to manage the side and the club has sort permission to re-enter a side in league division 5 for next season.
